Abstract:
An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Celia Antoniou
The ReSIG website now hosts a link to the webinar delivered on the 5th of September 2020 by Dr Celia Antoniou. As part of the monthly IATEFL webinars, the session focused on ‘The COVID-19 challenge and the teaching implications till now’. It reported on and briefly discussed the findings of a previously unpublished study on the experiences of a wide range of language educators in their effort to deliver online classes and their reflections on this experience, the required training along with lessons learnt and future steps. The second part of the webinar presented concrete examples for engaging students while teaching online and strategies that have proven to be effective. The final part focused on tips for managing teacher and student emotions while teaching online. The webinar concluded with recommendations for teachers and teacher educators suggesting some ideas about how to develop, keep teaching and overcome the difficulties of remote teaching.
Biodata:
Celia Antoniou has worked as a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at the University of Portsmouth, UK and is a Senior Teaching Fellow at IOE, UCL in London. She is also Programme leader for the BA in ESL at UWS. Her main research interests lie in the areas of concept-based instruction, assessment, e-learning, socio-cultural theory and English for specific / academic purposes. In the past she was teaching various forms of English as a Foreign Language in a variety of contexts in Greece, Ireland and the UK. She convenes linguistics and teacher training units at various levels and a number of distance learning units that are offered to trainees. She is involved in the Technology-Enhanced Learning SIG of BALEAP and the ReSIG of IATEFL as a committee member
